PRINTMAKING
"Abstracted Floral"
Projected # of Days: 3 days, 45 min periods
Targeted Student Group 5th grade

Overview
Through this lesson, the students will learn
about printmaking. Unlike the traditional
form of relief printing where material is cut
away, students will add raised lines to
create the negative space. Students will make
a template and learn how to apply inks to a surface which will then be imprinted onto
colored papers. This process will help students experience printmaking techniques utilizing
previous knowledge of elements and principles during the design process.
Big Idea: Printmaking
Key Concepts:
· A relief print is made by applying inks to a positive surface which allows the cut away or raised lines to
create the image.
Essential Questions:
· What is a relief print?
· How will I create a pleasing balance of negative and positive space?
· How will the elements such as: color, line, space, value and texture be used in my work?
Unit Objectives
· After learning about various printmaking techniques, students will create a template by applying raised lines onto a surface.
· Students will create a two-dimensional work of art employing the elements and principles of design.
· After experiencing the process of printmaking, students will recognize and use various materials to create works of art.
· After printing several editions of prints, students will be able to describe the technical proficiency of their work.
Materials and Vocabularies
· Various colors/types of papers for printing, printing inks, brayers, trays, 8” x 10” pre-cut pieces of heavweight vinyl, puff paint, YouTube – EV (ExpertVillage) Relief Printmaking Brayer Techniques
· Positive/negative space, relief print, brayer, edition, line, color, space, texture, contour line
Process of the lessons
Step 1
Introduce lesson by displaying several types of printed art works as well as materials used to print them.
Items such as: linoleum blocks, wood, metal plate, brayers, etc. Discuss the various techniques that can be used to make a print. Show students the YouTube video.
Step 2
Using the puff paint on a sample piece of vinyl, demonstrate how to draw the raised lines to create the relief surface. Supply students with a selection of pictures (flowers) and ask each to choose one. Place the vinyl sheet over the picture. Students will trace the contour lines of the flower first and then add any other design lines as desired.

Step 3
After the relief lines are dry. Students are shown various weights and colors of papers to be used for printing. Discuss the importance of color combinations; how contrasting lights and darks or using complimentary colors may make for a more interesting solution. Demonstrate how to roll out ink, coat the brayer uniformly and finally apply ink to the template. Show how to place paper onto the inked surface and rub with their hand.
