Philosophy
A vital component to the complete education of a child is the inclusion of visual art as a part of required curriculum. The creative, intellectual, perceptual, aesthetic, and historical aspects of the discipline provide greater potential for growth as a whole person. Innovative art projects that introduce ideas through interdisciplinary learning and thematic units reinforce learning in all content areas. The arts provide an avenue for understandings related to other disciplines of knowledge which bring learning into the 21st Century classroom. Connections made between various subjects by way of art increase meaning and comprehension of newly learned information.
The study of art is a source for enrichment in which students explore past and present cultures. This creates an awareness and acceptance of diversity. By discovering their similarities and differences in our world, intellectual and moral personalities can be formed.
Assessment for progress is determined on an individual basis. Through self-expression, the student is afforded the opportunity to improve upon unique artistic ability and technical skill. Student self-expression and exploration is promoted along with a deepening knowledge and understanding of art, design and art history. Most importantly, the capability for problem-solving and thinking “outside-of-the-box” is greatly increased.
The primary responsibility of the art educator is to provide the student with every opportunity to experience, understand and implement new information through the process of creating art.
